1) PAPUA NEEDS TO DEVELOP SAGO PLANTATIONS

Jayapura, Jubi – The government of Papua Province should develop sago palms in Papua, member of Commission II of DPR Papua, Wilhelmus Pigai, said to Jubi via phone on Friday (06/11/2015).
He said, sago plantations could provide economic opportunities to communities, and could meet the food needs of the people of Papua.
“I hope, Papua province in the fiscal year 2016 to budget for the development of sago tree in all regencies that have the potential development of sago commodity such as in Mimika, Nabire, Jayapura, and others,” Pigai said.
According to him, every month Mimika people can produce 200 tons of sago, it means people’s food needs can be met. In addition, the sago tree does not know the seasons. He will continue to grow and produce sago both in summer and rain seasons.
Earlier, policy coordinator of international conservation, Mujiyanto, in Manokwari, said local governments should have put ethics sago palm as the strategic potential food source.
He said, the government can do a better arrangement for developing and preserving this natural sago plant. Investors may be given concessions, native plants do not ignore the social and environmental local community, which has been their livelihood from this sector.
“In addition to having the potential of local food sources, sago can be developed as an export commodity to boost the economy. An important point to be aware of government, sago is the identity of Papua and West Papua, so the management should not be haphazard,” said Mujiyanto at the time. (Arjuna Pademme)

2) POLICE OFFICERS TO STAND TRIAL FOR SHOOTING

Timika, Jubi – Three members of Mimika Baru police will stand trial for the shooting of a civilian in Pisang village, Gorong – Gorong, Timika.
Chief deputy of Mimika police, commissioner Wirasto Adi Nugroho in Timika, on Wednesday (4/11/2015), said files of Bripka N, H and Brigadier Brigadier IP are ready but a date for their trial had not been set.
“Actually, the dossiers are ready. We are still awaiting the arrival of Mimika police chief Yustanto Mudjihars who is on duty in Potowayburu. He wants to know the results first,” he said.
Another police member, Alfred Karafir has undergone proceedings ethical code because of assaulting a resident. He was sentenced to a delay of promotion for a period, delay school for one year and a period of detention for 21 days.
According to Wirasto, the three members are still undergoing criminal proceedings.
In the near future Mimika Police will send a bullet which was found on the victim’s body to test ballistic firearm used by the perpetrators. Ballistics tests will be conducted at the Forensic Police in Makassar.
“The process of hearing criminal and code of conduct and discipline are all the same process,” Wirasto explained.
Currently, the shooting victim, Elfando Sabarufek is in good condition after intensive care at Mimika hospital. The victim was shot in the left chest and his left groin. (*)

3) TRANSPORT CHIEF: PAPUA MUST HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Jayapura, Jubi – Papua Province should have an airport to anticipate the Asean Economic Community (AEC), said the head of Papua’s Transportation Department Yusuf Yambe Yabdi.
“One of the promising international markets is the Pacific. For that there must be an international airport in Papua,” said Yusuf in Jayapura on Thursday (05/11/2015).
It can be viewed on the highly economic transaction in the Pacific region, especially Papua New Guinea and Jayapura. To develop and manage Papua should be seen as an area that has a specificity in the context of special autonomy. Thus, specific industries should be built in Papua to answer the needs of the Pacific markets increasing.
With these considerations, the Papua provincial government conduct an inventory of commodity that can be marketed to Papua New Guinea.
“Papua can be developed if there is industrial revolution. We should not build the industry to sell to Java, since there are already many industries, but we build the industry for the Pacific market,” he added.
Earlier, head of the Border and International Cooperation, Suzana Wanggai said that the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea have agreed to continue to improve trade, investment and tourism cooperation between the two countries that has lasted a long time. The decision came after the two countries met in the Border Liaison Meeting 12th held in Jayapura on Friday (16/10/2015).
In addition, the Indonesian government also agreed to encourage how the connectivity between the two countries, whether by land, sea and air as well as the desire of Governor and Deputy Governor of Papua through the Development programs.

4) LMA FILES POLICE REPORT ON ILLEGAL LOGGING IN MAKBON FOREST

Manokwari, Jubi – The chairman of the Institute of Indigenous Peoples (LMA) Malamoi Sorong, West Papua Province, Silas Kalami, made a police report about illegal logging in the forests of Makbon peoples.
“The report is now being followed up by Sorong police investigators for further legal process,” said Kalami in Sorong on Thursday (05/11/2015).
He said logging has been carried out without a permit in the area of indigenous forest of Makbon when the land owners are fighting to maintain and preserve forest areas by not doing illegal logging.
He said LMA also made a report to the Forest Service because illegal logging could destroy the forest.
He acknowledged that the indigenous landowners are also cutting down the trees but it is to build a house.
Illegal logging is happening lately, he added, but not to build a house for sale and there is no substitute for planting trees.
“We ask the police so that perpetrators of illegal logging can be processedso that other people do not arbitrarily cut down trees illegally,” he added. (*)

5) TEACHERS OF SD YPPK ST. BONEVENTURA IN MIMIKA DEMAND HOUSING

Timika, Jubi – A number of teachers at SD YPPK St. Bonaventure Keakwa elementary school in Mimika requested housing to the local government.
School principal Marsel Tomo said on Wednesday (4/11/2015) that houses for teachers built by the Mimika department of education are not livable.
He said the wooden houses now leaked and almost collapsed.
Although only built a few years ago, but the teacher housing in Kampung Keakwa did not last long.
“Actually, the houses of teachers in Keakwa should have not been lived. Yet the teachers still occupy it because there is no other choice, “he added.
SD YPPK St. Bonaventure Keakwa now has a new school building with full facilities built by the Institute of Amungme and Kamoro Community Development (LPMAK).
It consists of six classrooms, a library, the principal’s office and a bathroom with supporting facilities.
“Our new building has been used since May to coincide with the implementation of the National Examination. We are grateful for the attention of LPMAK. The existence of a new school building 
was highly expected, especially the old school buildings have been damaged,” he said. (*)

6) MILITARY AND POLICE URGED TO STOP BACKING “TOGEL” GAMBLING AND ALCOHOL ACTIVITIES
Jayapura, Jubi – Paniai Regent Hengki Kayame urged the chiefs of the military and police to crack down on gambling and alcohol rackeeting involving their subordinates.
“I have stressed that soldiers or police officers to not get involved in backing the sale of alcohol and togel gambling activities,” he said when contacted by Jubi via cell phone on Wednesday (4/11/2015).
The regent even reprimanded police chief, officer of Paniai district military command and Brimob Commander after after looking directly “togel”gambling activities at Enarotali market and visiting several places of Alcohol sales.
“Unscrupulous officials must stop backing up the activities that bring the problems in the society. This area must be secure and peaceful, “he said.
According to him, the matter has been reported to the military commander and Papua Police chief. “Therefore, I have reiterated that the institutions in the area of providing guidance and discipline, before giving sanctions,” he said again.
During his tenure, said Kayame, the area should be secure and peaceful.. “I do not like people get drunk and make noisy even casualties because of togel. Hence, it should be abolished, not to be opened again, “said Paniai regent.
He then appreciated those parties who also aggreed that “ togel gambling or alcohol and other types of gambling to be prohibited in Paniai.
Meanwhile, the coordinating of Evangelical Camp Church (Kingmi) in Paniai, Rev. Gerad Gobai, S.Th recently stated that religious figures in Paniai also supported government policy to exclude all gambling activities.
“Gambling and alcohol should be banned, and we strongly support it since there are many problems resulting from these activities,” Rev. Gobai added.
Previously, Paniai community leader who is also head of Awabutu village, Yermias Kayame said that a number of community leaders also committed to fight on the prohibition of alcohol and gambling. He then hoped that government policy will be realized optimally. (Abeth You)
